KINGS OF LYDIA. Alyattes II, circa 610-560 BC. Hekte (Electrum, 10 mm, 2.34 g), Sardes. Valvel Head of lion with open jaws to left. Rev. Double incuse square. Weidauer 93 var (Trite). Very rare. Clear and unusually fine.

Ex Nomos 3, 10 May 2011, 141, and from the OBS Collection, London.

The obverse die used to strike this coin was originally made to strike staters and bore two confronted lion heads, one on the left and one on the right, as here. The named issues of Alyattes are much rarer than the unnamed trites, as the one in the preceding lot.
