ISLAMIC, Anatolia & al-Jazira (Post-Seljuk). Danishmendids (Sivas). Amir Ghazi, AH 497-528 / AD 1104-1134. Dirhem (Bronze, 25 mm, 7.80 g, 11 h). IVZIΓ / IVZIΓE / ZHC. Rev. Christ seated facing on square back throne, raising right hand in benediction and holding Gospels in left. Cf. Butak 104. Cf. Casanova pl. 111, 1-2. Cf. Schlumberger 3-5. Cf. Whelam Type A (all with bust of Christ instead of Christ enthroned). Unpublished! Brown patina with earthen highlights. Nearly very fine.

The legend on this coin is nonsensical but seems to derive from Whelan's Type A dirhem of Amir Ghazi, with the obverse legend [OMEΓAC] / AMHPAC / AMHPΓA / ZHC ("[The Great] / amir / Amir Gha/zi"). Whelan's Type A depicts the nimbate bust of Christ facing on the reverse instead of Christ enthroned, as here, and because of this and the debased legend, it is unclear whether this is a new type for Amir Ghazi or simply an imitation combining the legend found on Amir Ghazi's coins with a Christ Pantokrator type found on Byzantine anonymous folles.
