Rev. kaśtilo Sphinx walking to right, left forefoot raised; in field to right, 8-pointed star. Burgos 544. CNH pg. 336, 39. SNG BM 1323-1344. Particularly well-struck for type - especially the reverse. Very fine.

Gallia 52, A 4, 1ff. Gäumann 68. LT 5368. An attractive piece with a lovely dark green patina. Slight roughness on the reverse, otherwise, extremely fine.

CELTIC, Carpathian region. Uncertain tribe. Late 2nd-early 1st century BC. Tetradrachm (Billon, 35 mm, 12.39 g, 1 h), "Bartkranzavers" type. Devolved head of Herakles to right, wearing lion's skin. Rev. Horse trotting to left. Dembski 1193. Lanz 577. OTA 269.5. Very fine.

CELTIC, Carpathian region. Uncertain tribe. Late 2nd-early 1st century BC. Tetradrachm (Silver plated bronze, 27 mm, 8.36 g, 9 h), "Herakleskopf" type. Head of Herakles in a lionskin headdress to right. Rev. Rider to right. Demski 1168. Karl 493 (same dies). Lanz 566. OTA 253. Clear. Chipped on the edge, and with the obverse struck from a worn die, otherwise, very fine.

CELTIC, Lower Danube. Uncertain tribe. 2nd-1st centuries BC. Drachm (Silver, 17 mm, 3.31 g, 12 h), Imitating Alexander III. Degraded head of Herakles to right, wearing lion's skin headdress. Rev. VΛΛΙ Zeus seated left, holding eagle in his right hand and scepter in his left; to left, forepart of a 'lion' to left. Cf. Kostial 889-90. OTA pl. 43, 574. Very fine.

CELTIC, Lower Danube. Uncertain tribe. 2nd-1st centuries BC. Drachm (Silver, 19 mm, 3.38 g, 4 h), Imitating Alexander III. Degraded head of Herakles to right, wearing lion's skin headdress. Rev. HIL Zeus seated left, holding eagle in his right hand and scepter in his left; to left, 'thunderbolt'. Cf. Kostial 889-90. OTA pl. 43, 574. Very fine.

CAMPANIA. Cumae. Circa 475-470 BC. Nomos (Silver, 20.5 mm, 7.44 g, 7 h). Facing lion's scalp flanked on either side by boar's head. Rev. KVMAION Barley-corn above large mussel shell. HN III 515. Cf. Rutter 3-8 (dies not recorded); SNG ANS -. Toned. Nearly very fine.

CALABRIA. Tarentum. Circa 430-425 BC. Nomos (Silver, 22 mm, 7.68 g, 7 h). Phalanthos riding dolphin to right; below, scallop shell. Rev. Nude rider on galloping horse to left. HN III 847. Fischer-Bossert 212 (V106/R153). Vlasto 288 (same dies). Nicely toned. Some striking flatness, otherwise, good very fine.

CALABRIA. Tarentum. Circa 302-281 BC. Drachm (Silver, 15.5 mm, 3.23 g, 2 h). Head of Athena to left, wearing crested Attic helmet ornamented with Skylla. Rev. TAPANTINΩN Owl with spread wings standing right on thunderbolt, head facing; to right, ΣΩ. HN III 1018. SNG ANS 1317-1319. Vlasto 1068-1074. Toned. Fine.

LUCANIA. Metapontum. Circa 330-290 BC. Nomos or Didrachm (Silver, 20 mm, 7.92 g, 4 h). Head of Demeter to left, wearing grain wreath, triple-pendant earring and pearl necklace. Rev. ΜΕΤΑ Ear of barley with leaf to left; above leaf, club; below leaf, ΔΙ. HN III . Johnston Class C, 1.10 (same dies). SNG ANS 488 (same obverse die). Lightly toned. A few minor deposits, otherwise, very fine.

LUCANIA. Metapontum. Circa 330-290 BC. Nomos or Didrachm (Silver, 21 mm, 7.90 g, 3 h). Head of Demeter to left, wearing grain wreath, triple pendant earring and pearl necklace. Rev. ΜΕΤΑ Ear of barley with leaf to left; to left above leaf, fork or rake; below leaf, [Δ]Α. HN III 1582. Johnston Class C, 5.12 = SNG ANS 453 (same dies). Striking weakness on the high points, otherwise, good very fine.

LUCANIA. Metapontum. Circa 330-290 BC. Nomos or Didrachm (Silver, 20 mm, 7.91 g, 5 h). Head of Demeter to right, wearing a grain wreath, pendant earring and necklace. Rev. META Ear of barley with leaf to right; above leaf, star of sixteen rays; below to left, [Λ]Υ. HN III 1592. Johnston Class C, 8.4 = SNG ANS 500 (same dies). Well struck and lightly toned. Good very fine.

LUCANIA. Metapontion. Circa 300-250 BC. Chalkous (Bronze, 14 mm, 2.38 g, 1 h). Draped bust of the DIoskouroi to right, each wearing laureate pilos . Rev. ME-TA Three barley-corns forming a triskeles; below, an eight-rayed star. HN III 1676. Johnston Bronze 41. Tan patina. A few scattered deposits, otherwise, very fine.

LUCANIA. Metapontum. Circa 300-250 BC. Chalkous (Bronze, 15 mm, 3.01 g, 12 h). Ivy-wreathed head of Dionysos to left. Rev. META Ear of barley with leaf to right; above leaf, cross-torch. HN III 1683. Johnston, Bronze, 47. Two-toned contrasting brown patina; well centered and struck. Very fine.

LUCANIA. Thourioi. Circa 443-400 BC. Stater (Silver, 19 mm, 7.57 g, 12 h). Head of Athena to right, wearing an Attic helmet ornamented with an olive branch. Rev. [Θ]ΟΥΡΙΩΝ Bull butting to right; in exergue, fish to right. HN III 1775. SNG ANS 900-14. Attractively toned, nicely centered and of good style. Light porosity and old scrapes under tone, otherwise, very fine.

LUCANIA. Thourioi. Circa 443-400 BC. Stater (Silver, 20 mm, 7.85 g, 10 h). Head ofAthena to right, wearing an Attic helmet ornamented with an olive branch. Rev. ΘΟΥΡΙΩΝ Bull butting to right; below, EY; in exergue, fish to right. HN III 1761. SNG ANS -. Toned and nicely centered. Very fine.

LUCANIA. Velia. Circa 340-334 BC. Nomos or Didrachm (Silver, 22.5 mm, 7.47 g, 10 h), from the "Θ" group. Head of Athena to left, wearing crested Attic helmet decorated with griffin; behind neck, Θ. Rev. YEΛHTΩN Lion walking to right; below, X. HN III 1284. SNG ANS 1293 (same dies). Williams 262 (O151/R207). Well centered. Surfaces slightly rough, otherwise, very fine.

LUCANIA. Velia. Circa 340-334 BC. Didrachm or nomos (Silver, 22.5 mm, 6.19 g, 3 h), from the "Θ" group. Head of Athena to left, wearing crested Attic helmet decorated with griffin; behind neck, dotted P. Rev. YEΛHTΩN Lion walking to right; above, Φ. HN III 1284. SNG Lloyd 520(same dies). Williams 264 (O152/R203). Puncture mark beneath chin, otherwise, nearly very fine.

BRUTTIUM. Kroton. Circa 350-300 BC. Nomos (Silver, 22.5 mm, 7.66 g, 3 h). Eagle standing left on hair, with wings displayed and head raised. Rev. KPO Tripod surmounted by wreath; to right, stork standing left on Δ. HN III 2175. SNG ANS 369. Graffiti in fields, otherwise, very fine.

BRUTTIUM. Rhegion. Circa 420-415/0 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 20 mm, 17.23 g, 7 h). Lion’s head seen from above and to the front. Rev. ΡΗΓΙΝΟΣ Laureate head of Apollo to right; behind, olive sprig. Herzfelder 65. HN III 2494. An attractive piece struck in high relief. Flan a little short, otherwise, good very fine.

SICILY. Akragas. Circa 480/478-470 BC. Didrachm (Silver, 20 mm, 8.27 g, 9 h). AK-PA Eagle standing to left, wings closed. Rev. Crab within shallow incuse. Westermark 244 (O84/R165). McClean 2025 (same dies). SNG Munich 52 (same dies). SNG Tübingen 558 (same dies). Nearly very fine.

SICILY. Akragas. Circa 465/4-446 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 23.5 mm, 17.06 g, 3 h). AKRAC - ANTOΣ Eagle standing to left atop Ionic column with volutes. Rev. Crab seen from above. SNG ANS 975 (same reverse die). Cf. Westermark 425 (O-/R88). A new obverse die for the series. Pitting and cleaning marks, otherwise, very fine.

SICILY. Himera. Circa 530-483/2 BC. Drachm (Silver, 21 mm, 5.03 g, 3 h). Cock standing to left. Rev. Mill-sail pattern in segmented square within shallow incuse square. HGC 2, 421. Kraay Group III, but dies unrecorded. Toned and well-struck. Flan crack, otherwise, good very fine.

SICILY. Katane. Circa 450-430 BC. Litra (Silver, 12 mm, 0.86 g, 2 h). Bald and bearded head of Silenos to right. Rev. KAT-ANE Thunderbolt with wings and volutes above; at the middle, gorytos. Auctiones 29, 12 June 2003, 509 (same dies). Cf. Myron 23 and SNG ANS 1238. Attractive and struck in good silver. Very fine.

SICILY. Leontini. Circa 450-440 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24.5 mm, 17.32 g, 3 h). Laureate head of Apollo to right. Rev. LE-O-NT-IN-ON Head of roaring lion to right; around, four barley corns. Boehringer, Münzgeschichte 35 (same dies). HGC 2, 667. SNG ANS 222-31. Lovely old cabinet tone. Very fine.

SICILY. Leontinoi. Circa 450-440 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 26 mm, 17.38 g, 6 h). Laureate head of Apollo to right. Rev. ΛΕΟΝΤΙ-ΝΟ-Ν Head of a lion with open jaws to right; around, four barley grains. Boehringer, Münzgeschichte 40 (this obverse die) and 38-39 (this reverse die). SNG ANS 229 (this obverse die) . Nicely toned. Scratches on the obverse and general surface roughness , otherwise, very fine.

SICILY. Messana. 465-462 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 26 mm, 17.20 g, 6 h). Charioteer driving biga of mules walking to right; in exergue, olive leaf. Rev. ΜΕSSE-Ν-ΙΟΝ Hare springing to right. Caltabiano 217 (D121?/R115). HGC 2, 779. SNG ANS -. Toned and well centered with a nice, clear reverse. Die-breaks on obverse, otherwise, very fine.

SICILY. Segesta. Circa 475/70-455/50 BC. Didrachm (Silver, 22.5 mm, 8.51 g, 1 h). ΣΕΓΕ[ΣΤΑ-ΖΙΒ] (retrograde) Hound, the rivergod Krimisos, standing to right. Rev. Head of the nymph Aigeste to right, her hair bound with a taenia; all within a linear circular border. Hurter 57 (V18/R35). McClean 2532 (same dies). SNG ANS 618 (same dies). Well centered and lightly toned. Fine.

SICILY. Segesta. Circa 455/50-445/40 BC. Didrachm (Silver, 22 mm, 8.40 g, 12 h). Hound, the rivergod Krimisos, standing to left; above, barley grain. Rev. ΣΕCEΣΤΑΖΙΒ (retrograde) Head of the nymph Aigeste to left, her hair bound with taenia and curled up at the back. Hurter 72 (V24/R38). SNG ANS 636 (same dies). SNG Ashmolean 1874 (same dies). SNG Lloyd 1167 (same dies). Light toning. Nearly very fine.

SICILY. Segesta. Circa 412/10-400 BC. Didrachm (Silver, 27.5 mm, 8.56 g, 12 h). Hound, the rivergod Krimisos, standing to right; above, head of the nymph Segesta to right. Rev. EΓEΣΣΤΑZI-B Head of the nymph Segesta to right. BMC 28 (same reverse die). De Luynes 1116 (same obverse die). Hurter 163 (V47/R90). An interesting and quite unusual double-strike. Very fine.

SICILY. Selinos. Circa 540-515 BC. Didrachm (Silver, 20.5 mm, 8.50 g, 7 h). Wild parsley, selinon, leaf. Rev. Incuse square composed of twelve triangles, half of which are raised and half sunken. Arnold-Biucchi Group I, 7. Selinus 25-28. Toned. Nearly extremely fine.

SICILY. Selinos. Circa 455-409 BC. Litra (Silver, 13 mm, 0.63 g, 3 h). Nymph seated left on rock, touching snake coiled before her with right hand. Rev. ΣEΛINOΣ Man-headed bull to right; fish to right in exergue. SNG ANS 711-2. SNG Lloyd 1271. Toned. Porosity. About very fine.

SICILY. Syracuse. Dion, 357-354 BC. Hemilitron (Bronze, 18 mm, 3.69 g, 8 h). ΖΕΥΣ ΕΛΕΥΘΕΡΙΟΣ Laureate head of Zeus to left. Rev. ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙΩΝ Octopus with its head above. CNS 75. SNG Copenhagen 731. SNG Morcom 737. Very rare. Nicely centered and with a dark green-black patina. Very fine.

SICILY. Syracuse. Agathokles, 317-289 BC. Litra (Bronze, 23 mm, 10.54 g, 7 h), struck circa 306/4-289. ΣΩΤΕΙΡΑ Head of Artemis Soteira to right, wearing single-pendant earring and pearl necklace and with her quiver over her shoulder. Rev. ΑΓΑΘΟΚΛΕΟΣ / ΒΑΣΙΛΕΟΣ Winged thunderbolt. BAR issue 20. Calciati 142. SNG ANS 708. Well centered with a pleasing light brown patina. Very fine.

SICILY. Syracuse. Hieron II, 275-215 BC. Trias (?) (Bronze, 20 mm, 6.01 g, 6 h), c. 275-269. ΣΥPAKOΣIΩN Head of Kore to left, wearing wreath of grain, single-pendant earring and pearl necklace. Rev. Bull butting to left; above club and M; in exergue, IE. BAR issue 53. CNS 192. SNG ANS 580-3 (Agathokles). A pleasing example with a nice brown patina. Very fine.

SICILY. Syracuse. Philistis, wife of Hieron II, 275-215 BC. 16 Litrai (Silver, 26 mm, 13.54 g, 2 h), 218/7-214. Diademed and veiled bust of Philistis to left; behind, star. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΙΣΣΑΣ / ΦΙΛΙΣΤΙΔΟΣ Nike driving quadriga walking to right; above, star; to right, [Κ]. SNG ANS 850. SNG Lloyd 1545. Nicely toned. Some marks and striking faults, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

CARTHAGE. Circa 350-320 BC. Stater (Gold, 18.5 mm, 9.11 g, 11 h). Head of Tanit to left, wreathed with grain ears, wearing triple-pendant earring and necklace with nine pendants; pellet before neck. Rev. Horse standing right; in field before forelegs, trefoil of pellets. Jenkins & Lewis Group IIIf, 29ff (dies not recorded). MAA 4. Lustrous and well-struck. Extremely fine.
