LYDIA. Maeonia. Pseudo-autonomous issue, 2nd-3rd century. (Bronze, 20.5 mm, 5.77 g, 6 h). Bare head of Herakles to left. Rev. MAIONΩΝ Silenos seated right on wicker basket, holding kantharos in right hand, and with left, propping the infant Dionysos on his left knee. BMC 16. LS -. SNG Copenhagen -. SNG von Aulock -. Dark brown patina. Very fine.

In Greek mythology, Selinos was he oldest of the satyrs and the foster father, companion and tutor of the wine god Dionysos. Selinos is forever depicted as an inebriated old man, just as here where he is shown clutching his cup of wine while at the same time bouncing the child god on his knee. His posture is laid back and he is surely inebriated. Such a poor influence: it is no wonder that Dionysos grew up to be the god of choice for drunkards.
