CALABRIA. Tarentum. Circa 240-228 BC. Nomos (Silver, 21 mm, 6.57 g, 8 h), struck under the magistrates Philokles, Le..., and Arn.... Nude jockey riding horse walking to right, holding the reins in his left hand and crowning the horse with a wreath held in his right; to left, monogram of ΑΡΝ; to right, monogram of ΛΕ; below, ΦΙΛΟ / ΚΛΗΣ over dolphin swimming to right. Rev. Τ-ΑΡΑΣ Taras riding dolphin to left, holding a horse rhyton in his right hand and a trident (the two side prongs of the trident head are in the form of dolphins) in his left; to right, two highly elaborate amphoroi (or loutrophoroi?) on elaborate stands and with lids. HN III 1057. SNG ANS 1254. SNG BN 2057. Vlasto 950. An attractive piece, but with some slight striking flatness. Extremely fine.

[ΞΕ]-ΝΟΚΡΑ/[ΤH]-Σ Armored cavalryman, riding horse moving to left, raising his right hand in salute and turning his bearded and laureate head to face the viewer; in upper field to right, monogram and pileus. Rev. [ΤΑ]ΡΑΣ Phalanthos, nude, riding dolphin to left, his body turned slightly back to right, holding a trident over his right shoulder in his right hand and holding his drapery in his upraised left; to right, monogram of ΣΩ; below, waves and cuttlefish. HN III 1058. SNG ANS 1258. Vlasto 957. Lustrous. Struck from a slightly worn die, otherwise, virtually as struck.
