The amphora seen on the reverse of this handsome coin was used to export the island's wine, of which a robust trade flourished in antiquity. Dionysos, the god perhaps best known for his bacchanalian festivals and whose divine protection surely boosted the island's wine economy, was particularly revered by the islanders, who held an annual celebration in his honor. During the height of the festival, a fountain was even made to flow with wine.
