KORKYRA. Korkyra. Roman rule, circa 229-48 BC. (Bronze, 18 mm, 5.78 g, 11 h). Ivy-wreathed head of Dionysos to left. Rev. K-O Amphora; above, grape bunch. BMC 428-30. HGC 6, 82 corr (kantharos). Brown patina; well-struck. Good very fine.

From the Vineyard Collection, privately purchased from Classical Numismatic Group in December 1998 (inv. no. 708814).

The kantharos was a small two-handled cup for drinking wine. Although metal examples have been found, most were made of pottery. Several spectacular examples with bases that deviate from the normal slender pedestal mount exist. These have the heads of satyrs, maenads and other gods as a base atop which rests the cup.
