KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’, 336-323 BC. Drachm (Silver, 20.5 mm, 4.09 g, 11 h), Chios, circa 290-275. Head of Herakles to right, wearing lion's skin headdress. Rev. ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ Zeus seated to left on backless throne, holding eagle in his outstreched right hand and long scepter in his left; in field to left, monogram over bunch of grapes. Bauslaugh, Posthumous, Series 2A (but obverse die 14, unlisted for this series/). HGC 6, 1131. Price 2317. Elegantly toned. Obverse slightly off-center, otherwise, good very fine.

The coin is part of a series that has been connected by Price with the military activities of Lysimachos and Seleukos that led to the battle of Kurupedion (281 BC). The latter part of the series might reflect the turmoil caused by the Celtic invasion of Asia Minor.
