THRACE. Abdera. Circa 365/0-350/45 BC. Tetrobol (Silver, 14 mm, 2.88 g, 1 h), struck under the magistrate Iromnemos. AB[Δ] Griffin atop Ionic column springing left with both forelegs raised. Rev. Kantharos; IPO-MNH-MΩN around linear frame. May, Abdera 442 (A297/P350). Toned. Good very fine.

From the Vineyard Collection, ex Künker 43, 29 March 1998, 47.

The kantharos was a small two-handled cup for drinking wine. Although metal examples have been found, most were made of pottery. Several spectacular examples with bases that deviate from the normal slender pedestal mount exist. These have the heads of satyrs, maenads and other gods as a base atop which rests the cup.
