JUDAEA. Legio VI Ferrata. Countermarked in early 2nd century AD. (Bronze, 21.5 mm, 6.36 g, 1 h), struck on a coin of Antioch , time of Nero, 54-68. Laureate head of Nero to left; LVIF (Legio VI Ferrata) and male head to right, within rectangular countermarks punched against Nero's head. Rev. Large S•C within laurel wreath. Hendin 1608. Howgego 726. Clear undertype of Nero from Seleucis and Piera, Antioch in Syria. Rare. Good fine.



Legio VI Ferrata was one of only a few select Roman legions who were stationed in Israel during the Jewish Wars.
