PHRYGIA. Hierapolis. Augustus, 27 BC-14 AD. Hemiassarion (Bronze, 18 mm, 2.99 g, 12 h), struck in the name of the proconsul of Asia, Paullus Fabius Maximus, under the magistrates Chares and Kokos, 10-9 BC. ΦΑΒΙΟΣ ΜΑΞΙΜΟΣ Bare head of Fabius Maximus to right. Rev. ΙΕΡΑΠΟ/ΛΕΙΤΩΝ/ ΧΑΡΗΣ /ΚΩ in four lines within dotted circle. BMC 96. RPC 2932. A scarce type; fine green patina. Stuck slightly off-center, otherwise, very fine.



Paullus was named after his famous ancestor, Lucius Aemilius Paullus, known for his victory over the forces of Perseas, the last Macedonian king, for which he was the title Macedonicus by the Senate.
