CELTIC, Central Europe. Vindelici. Early 1st century BC. 1/4 Stater (Gold, 10 mm, 1.86 g). Eagle's head to right. Rev. Three pellets within a torque with a pellet at each end. Dembski -. Flesche 311. Karl -. Leu 65, 1996, 4 (there unique and unpublished). An extremely rare variety with the eagle head to right. Struck from a slightly worn obverse die, otherwise, very fine.

CELTIC, Eastern Celts. Skordoski in Syrmia, Circa 3rd-2nd century BC. Drachm (Silver, 12 mm, 2.23 g, 3 h), imitating Philip II of Macedon, "Kugelwange/Dachreiter" type. Celticized laureate head of Zeus to right. Rev. Horse galloping to left; above, wheel. Castelin 1282. Dembski 1110-1. A late example in the series. Very fine.

CALABRIA. Tarentum. Circa 380-325 BC. Diobol (Silver, 12.5 mm, 1.21 g, 9 h). Head of Athena to left, wearing Attic helmet adorned with Skylla. Rev. [TAPANTINΩN] Herakles standing to right, fighting the Nemean lion; between his legs, Σ. HN III 914. Vlasto 1236-7. Some uncleaned deposits, otherwise, good very fine.

CALABRIA. Tarentum. Circa 380-325 BC. Diobol (Silver, 12 mm, 1.15 g, 8 h). Head of Athena to right, wearing Attic helmet adorned with Skylla. Rev. Herakles kneeling to right, fighting the Nemean lion; above to right, A; behind, [club]. HN III 912. Vlasto 1314-21. Clear and attractive. Obverse slightly off-centered, otherwise, about extremely fine.

LUCANIA. Herakleia. Circa 420/15-390 BC. Nomos (Silver, 22 mm, 7.34 g, 1 h). Head of Athena to right, wearing crested Athenian helmet adorned with hippocamp with curled wing. Rev. HPAKΛEIΩN Herakles grappling with the Nemean lion; to left, at Herakles' feet, bow and club; between Herakles's legs, Φ. HN III 1372. SNG ANS 52 (same dies). Work 17. Scarce type. Good fine.

LUCANIA. Metapontum. Circa 510-470 BC. Stater (Silver, 23.5 mm, 7.90 g, 12 h). META (retrograde) Ear of barley with seven grains. Rev. Ear of barley with six grains, all incuse; rayed border. HN III 1482. Noe 178. Toned. A few marks, otherwise, nearly very fine.

LUCANIA. Metapontum. Circa 510-470. Stater (Silver, 22 mm, 7.57 g, 12 h). ΜΕΤΑΠ Ear of barley with seven grains; around, border of dots. Rev. Ear of barley with seven grains, incuse; rayed border. HN III 1482. Toned. Rough area on the obverse, otherwise, about very fine.

LUCANIA. Metapontum. Circa 340-330 BC. Didrachm or nomos (Silver, 21.5 mm, 7.70 g, 9 h). Head of Demeter to left, wearing a barley wreath, a pendant earring and a simple necklace. Rev. ΜΕ - ΤΑ Ear of barley with leaf to right; to left, caduceus and ΛΥ. HN III 1556. Johnston, Class A, 1.2 (this obverse die). SNG Lloyd 372 (this obverse die). Clear. Usual die break on the obverse, otherwise, very fine.

LUCANIA. Metapontum. Circa 300-250 BC. Chalkous (Bronze, 15.5 mm, 2.75 g, 12 h). Laureate head of Apollo to left. Rev. ΜΕΤΑ Grain ear with leaf to left; to right, tripod. HN III 1675. Johnston 40. SNG ANS 596-7. Attractive, sharp and with a brown patina. Flan crack at 8h, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

LUCANIA. Metapontum. Circa 300-250 BC. Chalkous (Bronze, 15 mm, 2.87 g, 10 h). Ivy-wreathed head of Dionysos to left. Rev. META Ear of barley with leaf to right; above leaf, cross-torch. HN III 1683. Johnston, Bronze, 47. SNG ANS 593. Attractive green-brown patina. Good very fine.

LUCANIA. Metapontum. Circa 300-250 BC. Chalkous (Bronze, 16.5 mm, 2.72 g, 1 h). Ivy-wreathed head of Dionysos to left. Rev. META Ear of barley with leaf to right; above leaf, cross-torch. HN III 1683. Johnston, Bronze, 47. SNG ANS 593. Attractive brown patina. Flan crack at 6h, otherwise, good very fine.

LUCANIA. Metapontum. Circa 300-250 BC. Chalkous (Bronze, 15 mm, 2.74 g, 10 h). Veiled head of Demeter to right. Rev. META Ear of barley with leaf to right and left; to left, EY monogram. HN III 1693. LUCANIA. Metapontum. Circa 300-250 BC. Chalkous (Bronze, 15 mm, 2.86 g, 5 h). Head of youthful Herakles to right, wearing lion's skin headdress, tied below chin. Rev. ΜΕΤΑ Ear of barley with leaf to right. HN III 1696. Johnson, Bronze, 60. SNG ANS 567. SNG Copenhagen 1253. Well-struck and sharp, with a fine brown patina. Extremely fine.

LUCANIA. Metapontum. Circa 300-250 BC. Chalkous (Bronze, 13.5 mm, 2.67 g, 1 h). Head of Demeter to right, wearing wreath of barley ears and triple-pendant earring. Rev. ΜΕΤΑ Ear of barley with leaf to right; above leaf, fly to right. HN III 1698. Johnson, Bronze, 62. SNG ANS 574. SNG Copenhagen 1261. Well-struck and sharp, with a fine brown patina. Good very fine.

LUCANIA. Poseidonia. Circa 470-445 BC. Stater (Silver, 19 mm, 8.00 g, 4 h). ΠΟΜΕS Poseidon striding to right, brandishing trident and with chlamys over his shoulders. Rev. ΠΟΜΕS (retrograde) Bull standing to right on dotted ground line; in exergue, (retrograde) SA. HN III 1114. SNG ANS 649 var (SA on exergue). An attractive stater of Poseidonia, toned and well-struck; very rare variation. Very fine.

LUCANIA. Poseidonia. Circa 470-445 BC. Stater (Silver, 18 mm, 7.58 g, 10 h). [ΠOΣE] Poseidon advancing to right, wielding trident. Rev. ΠOΣE (retrograde) Bull standing to left; below, Λ; all within circular incuse. HN III 1114. SNG ANS 651. SNG Copenhagen 1279. Nearly fine.

LUCANIA. Thourioi. Circa 350-300 BC. Stater (Silver, 21 mm, 7.70 g, 9 h). Head of Athena to right, wearing helmet adorned with Skylla. Rev. ΘΟΥΡΙΩΝ/Z Bull butting to right; in the exergue, fish swimming to right. HN III 1813. SNG ANS 1056-7 (same obverse die). Struck from a worn obverse die as usual, otherwise, nearly very fine.

LUCANIA. Velia. Circa 440/35-400 BC. Didrachm (Silver, 22 mm, 7.63 g, 5 h). Head of Athena to left, wearing laureate crested Attic helmet adorned with a griffin. Rev. ΥEΛ-HT-EΩ-N Lion attacking stag to right. BMC 10. HN 1270. SNG ANS 1260 (same dies). Williams 161 (O106/R124). Scarce variety. Graffito on the reverse and struck from a rusty obverse die, otherwise, about very fine.

LUCANIA. Velia. Circa 340-334 BC. Didrachm or nomos (Silver, 21 mm, 7.45 g, 2 h), from the "Θ" group. Head of Athena to left, wearing crested Attic helmet decorated with griffin; behind neck, Θ; below, to left and right, dolphin swimming downwards. Rev. YEΛHTΩN Lion walking to right; below, Θ. HN III 1284. SNG Oxford 1198 (same dies). Williams 271 (O154+/R271). Clear and attractive. Nearly very fine.

BRUTTIUM. Kaulonia. Circa 475-425 BC. Stater (Silver, 19 mm, 7.17 g, 6 h). ΚΑVΛ Apollo, nude, his hair bound with a taenia, advancing to right, with a laurel branch in his upraised right hand and a daimon (obscured by a die fault) running to right on his outstretched left arm. Rev. ΚΑVΛ (retrograde) Stag standing to right; to right, laurel branch. HN III 2046. Noe, Caulonia 86. Toned. Nearly very fine.

BRUTTIUM. Kroton. Circa 480-430 BC. Nomos (Silver, 20 mm, 8.01 g, 12 h). ϘΡΟ Tripod with three handles, and legs ending in lions’ paws; to left, crane standing to right; border of dots. Rev. As the obverse but incuse and without the crane; rayed border. HN Italy 2102. SNG ANS 265-8. Good very fine.

BRUTTIUM. Kroton. Circa 350-300 BC. Nomos (Silver, 21.5 mm, 7.65 g, 1 h). Eagle standing to left on olive branch; below, AI. Rev. KPO / Δ Tripod. HN Italy 2172. SNG ANS 366 (same dies). Bright and clear. Die break on the obverse, otherwise, good very fine.

BRUTTIUM. Kroton. Circa 350-300 BC. Nomos (Silver, 24.5 mm, 7.64 g, 10 h). Eagle with spread wings, standing left on olive branch. Rev. KPO Tripod with fillet hanging from the right ring; to right, Δ. HN Italy 2173. SNG ANS 363 (same dies). Clear and fairly well-centered. With the usual die breaks, as on the ANS example, otherwise, good very fine.

BRUTTIUM. Lokroi Epizephyrioi. Circa 350-275 BC. Stater (Silver, 22 mm, 8.61 g, 3 h). Pegasus with straight wings, flying to left; below, thunderbolt. Rev. ΛOKPΩN Head of Athena to left, wearing Corinthian helmet. Calciati 13. HN Italy 2342. Clear and well-centered. Struck on a slightly ragged flan and with die rust on the obverse, otherwise, good very fine.

SICILY. Leontini, Circa 450-440 BC. Litra (Silver, 12 mm, 0.83 g, 10 h). ΛΕΟ - Ν Lion’s head with open jaws to right. Rev. Apollo, nude, standing left holding phiale in his right hand and branch in his left; to left, altar; to right, barley grain. Boehringer, Münzgeschichte 50. SNG ANS 264. SNG Fitzwilliam 1054. A few rough spots, otherwise, very fine.

SICILY. Piakos. Circa 425-420 BC. Tetras (Bronze, 15 mm, 2.69 g, 12 h). Π Ι Α Κ Laureate head of a youthful river god to left, with horn above his forehead; to left, three pellets; to right, leaf. Rev. Dog springing on the back of a kneeling doe to right; to right, and left, wheat grain. AMB 397. CNS 2. Rizzo pl. LX, 14. Rare. With a smooth, black patina. Good very fine.

ISLANDS OFF SICILY. Lopadusa (?). Circa 2nd century BC. (Bronze, 17 mm, 2.66 g, 12 h). Crab with punic legend below. Rev. Symbol of Tanit and kerykeion within laurel wreath tied below. CNS 3. SNG Copenhagen (Africa) 485-488. Among the finest examples known. Very fine.

THRACE. Byzantion. Circa 340-320 BC. Drachm or siglos (Silver, 18 mm, 5.33 g). YΠY Heifer with front left leg raised, standing to left on a dolphin swimming to left. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square in the form of 'mill sail'. HGC 3.2, 1389. SNG Black Sea 21-8. SNG Copenhagen 476. Toned. Minor test nick on the heifer, otherwise, good very fine.

THRACE. Byzantion. Circa 340-320 BC. Drachm or siglos (Silver, 19 mm, 5.26 g). YΠY Heifer standing left on dolphin left with front left leg raised. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square in the form of 'mill sail'. HGC 3.2, 1389. SNG BM Black Sea 21. SNG Copenhagen 476. Toned. Good very fine.

THRACE. Chersonesos. Circa 386-338 BC. Hemidrachm (Silver, 7.5 mm, 2.15 g). Forepart of a lion to right, his head turned back to left. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square with two raised and two sunken squares; in one of the sunken squares, grape bunch; in the other, pellet. HGC 3, 1437. McClean 4079. Toned. Very fine.

THRACE. Chersonesos. Circa 386-309 BC. Chalkous (Bronze, 11 mm, 1.22 g, 11 h). Diademed head of Pan to right. Rev. XEP/PO Barley grain. Apparently unpublished in the standard references, but cf. SNG Copenhagen 844-9 and SNG Evelpides 1045-1048 for the same reverse type with differing obverses. Very rare. Dark green patina. Very fine.

ISLANDS OFF THRACE, Lemnos. Hephaistia. Circa 276/61-167 BC. Dichalkon (Bronze, 14 mm, 3.17 g, 12 h). Radiate head of Helios to right. Rev. HΦAI Bunch of grapes hanging from a vine branch on a thyrsos. HGC 6, 288. SNG Copenhagen 982. Rare type. Pleasant olive-green patina. About very fine.

ISLANDS OFF THRACE, Thasos. Circa 500-463 BC. Stater (Silver, 23 mm, 9.66 g), c. 500-480 BC. Ithyphallic satyr advancing to right, carrying protesting nymph. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. Le Rider, Thasiennes 2. SNG Copenhagen 1009. A well-centered, complete example, struck on a broad flan. Some minor scratches, bangs and die rust on the obverse, otherwise, good very fine.

ISLANDS OFF THRACE, Thasos. Circa 500-463 BC. Drachm (Silver, 17 mm, 4.64 g), c. 500-480 BC. Ithyphallic satyr advancing to right, carrying protesting nymph. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. Le Rider, Thasiennes 5. SNG Copenhagen 1014. Toned; scarce denomination. Scratches and roughness, otherwise, very fine.

ISLANDS OFF THRACE, Thasos. 500-480 BC. Trihemiobol or 1/8 Stater (Silver, 11 mm, 1.03 g). Satyr running to right. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. HGC 6, 333. Le Rider, Thasiennes 4. A clear example of remarkably fine style, struck from an exceptionally well-made obverse die. Good very fine.

KINGS OF THRACE. Ketriporis, circa 356-352/1 BC. Chalcous (Bronze, 11 mm, 1.13 g, 4 h). Head of Dionysos to right, wearing ivy-wreath. Rev. KETPI Kantharos; to left, thyrsos; to right crescent. HGC 3.2, 1709. Topalov 2. A wonderful coin with a fine portrait of Dionysos; rarely seen so nice. Good very fine.

THRACO-MACEDONIAN TRIBES, Orreskioi. Circa 500-480 BC. Diobol (Silver, 12 mm, 0.91 g). Calf kneeling to right. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. AMNG pl. 18, 8. SNG ANS 985 (same dies but from earlier state). Extremely rare. Die break on the obverse, otherwise, very fine.

THRACO-MACEDONIAN REGION. Uncertain. Early 5th century BC. Hekte or Sixth Stater (Silver, 11.5 mm, 1.82 g, 6 h). Forepart of bridled horse running to right. Rev. Ram kneeling to right, his head turned back to left. SNG ANS 995. Tzamalis 47. Same dies as CNG e-auction 352, 2015, 53. Very rare and unusual; sharply struck from unusually well engraved dies. Slightly porous, otherwise, good very fine.

MACEDON. Aineia. Circa 510-480 BC. Diobol (Silver, 12 mm, 1.32 g). Archaic-style bearded head of Aineas to right, wearing Corinthian helmet. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. AMNG III, 4. HGC 3.1, 373. SNG ANS 71 (but of later style). Very rare, especially in this denomination and of such fine archaic style. Struck on an uneven flan with porous surfaces, otherwise, very fine.

MACEDON. Amphipolis. late 5th-early 4th century BC. Obol (Silver, 10 mm, 0.40 g, 11 h). Male head to right (Apollo?), wearing tainia. Rev. A-M-Φ-I Fish swimming diagonally downwards to right. HGC 3, 416. Lorber Group II, cf. 74-5 [O.O.7/R - (unpublished reverse die)]. SNG ANS 83-84. Very rare; nicely struck in good silver. Very fine.

MACEDON. Dikaia. Circa 450-425/0 BC. Hemiobol (Silver, 7 mm, 0.28 g, 8 h). Δ Forepart of bull to right. Rev. Octopus within an incuse square. AMNG III/2, 10. Schönert-Geiss, Bisanthe -. SNG ANS -. Extremely rare. Slightly porous and with the usual die breaks on the reverse, otherwise, good fine.

MACEDON. Dikaia. Circa 425-400 BC. Hemiobol (Silver, 7.5 mm, 0.34 g, 1 h). Head of nymph to left. Rev. Head and neck of bull to right; on neck, Δ. HGC 3.1 -. SNG ANS -. Traité IV 1439 corr. & pl. CCCXL, 4. Extremely rare. Very slightly doubled reverse. Very fine.

MACEDON. Eion. Circa 480-470 BC. Diobol (Silver, 9 mm, 0.91 g). Goose standing to left, head turned to left; uncertain object to right. Rev. Rough incuse square. SNG ANS 269 var. Particularly scarce with the goose to left; the ANS has only a single specimen, but that lacks the symbol on the obverse. Very fine.

MACEDON. Eion. Circa 470-460 BC. Diobol (Silver, 11 mm, 1.21 g). Goose standing to right on decorated base, turning head to left to face a lizard crawling downwards to left; in field below left, Θ. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. AMNG III/2, p. 139, 37. SNG ANS 273-4. A well-centered and complete example or particularly fine style. Good very fine.

MACEDON. Eion. Circa 460-400 BC. Trihemiobol (Silver, 12 mm, 0.82 g). Goose standing to right, head turned back to left; above, lizard to left; below, A. Rev. Incuse square. HGC 3.1, 521. SNG ANS 285-6. Bright and clear. Slightly porous, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

MACEDON. Neapolis. Circa 500-480 BC. Stater (Silver, 25 mm, 9.93 g). Gorgoneion facing with extended tongue. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. Dewing 1064. SNG ANS 419. Svoronos pl. 9, 33. Struck on a broad and uneven flan. Area of flatness, scratches and die rust on the obverse, otherwise, very fine.

MACEDON. Neapolis. Circa 424-350 BC. Hemidrachm (Silver, 13 mm, 1.73 g, 6 h). Gorgoneion facing with protruding tongue. Rev. Ν-Ε / Ο-Π Head of the nymph of Neapolis to right, her hair coiled around her head and with a bun at the back, wearing a plain necklace with a pendant. SNG ANS 430-454. Of fine style and great engraving skill. About extremely fine.
