KINGS OF COMMAGENE. Antiochos IV Epiphanes, with Iotape, AD 38-40 and 41-72. Oktachalkon (Bronze, 28 mm, 12.44 g, 12 h), late series with bevelled edge, with a re-validation countermark from Antioch, Samosata, c. 66-72. ΒΑCΙΛEYC MEΓ ANTIOXOC EΠI Diademed and draped bust of Antiochos IV to right; to right, round countermark with anchor flanked by A-N. Rev. KOMMAΓ-HNΩN around Scorpion; all within laurel wreath. ACV 199. BMC 4. Kovacs 257. RPC I 3856; for q/m Kovacs 2 = GIC 373. Fine portrait, brown patina. Some cleaning marks on obverse, otherwise, good very fine.



The countermark seems to have been applied on the coin shortly after 69 AD.

Bust of Alexander the Great to right, as Dionysos, wearing helmet covered with a panther skin and adorned with a bull's horn and ear, and with a panther's skin tied around his shoulders. Rev. ΒΑΣIΛΕΩΣ ΣΕΛΕΥΚΟΥ Nike walking to right, placing wreath on trophy of arms to right; to left and right of Nike, monogram. ESM 417. SC 173.12. Toned. Very fine.
