KINGS OF SOPHENE. Mithradates II, Philopator, c. 89-85 BC, or slightly later. (Bronze, 24 mm, 12.30 g, 12 h), a coin of Antiochos IV Epiphanes (175-164 BC), countermarked for use in Sophene, Seleukeia on-the-Tigris, c. 173/2 or later. Diademed head of Antiochos IV to right. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΝΤΙΟΧΟΥ ΘΕΟΥ ΕΠΙΦΑΝΟΥΣ Goddess enthroned to left, holding Nike and scepter; in the field to left, mon0gram of ΠAP; in the upper left field, countermark of ΜΙΟ (retrograde) within an oblong indent. For the host coin: CSE 989. HGC 9, 648. SC 1513. SNG Spaer 1199. For the countermark: see Kovacs p. 79, 23. Apparently quite scarce, if not rare, especially on a coin so much earlier than those of Mithradates II. Very fine.

KINGS OF ARMENIA. Tigranes II ‘the Great’, 95-56 BC. Chalkous (Bronze, 16.5 mm, 1.76 g, 12 h), first series, Tigranokerta, c. 80-68. Diademed and draped bust of Tigranes II to right, wearing five-pointed tiara decorated with a star between two eagles. Rev. BAΣIΛEΩΣ BAΣIΛEΩN TIΓPANOY Cornucopia filled with fruits and bound with fillet. ACV 93,99. Kovacs 79. YTN 180. Particularly small, but elegant portrait. Very fine.

Diademed and draped bust of Tigranes II to right, wearing five-pointed tiara decorated with a star between two eagles. Rev. BAΣIΛEΩΣ BAΣIΛEΩN TIΓPANOY The Tyche of Tigranocerta seated to right on a rock, holding a laurel branch in her right hand; below right, river-god Araxes swimming to right; TP and A monograms across the field. ACV 48. Kovacs 81. YTN 64. Boldly struck with an attractive glossy dark patina. Very fine.
