KINGS OF SOPHENE. Mithradates II, Philopator, c. 89-85 BC, or slightly later. (Bronze, 24 mm, 12.30 g, 12 h), a coin of Antiochos IV Epiphanes (175-164 BC), countermarked for use in Sophene, Seleukeia on-the-Tigris, c. 173/2 or later. Diademed head of Antiochos IV to right. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΝΤΙΟΧΟΥ ΘΕΟΥ ΕΠΙΦΑΝΟΥΣ Goddess enthroned to left, holding Nike and scepter; in the field to left, mon0gram of ΠAP; in the upper left field, countermark of ΜΙΟ (retrograde) within an oblong indent. For the host coin: CSE 989. HGC 9, 648. SC 1513. SNG Spaer 1199. For the countermark: see Kovacs p. 79, 23. Apparently quite scarce, if not rare, especially on a coin so much earlier than those of Mithradates II. Very fine.
