CILICIA. Tarsus. Hadrian, 117-138. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 10.19 g, 12 h), mid 120s. ΑΥΤ ΚΑΙ ΘΕ ΤΡΑ ΠΑΡ ΥΙ ΘΕ ΝΕΡ ΥΙ ΤΡΑΙ ΑΔΡΙΑΝΟC CE Laureate bust of Hadrian to right, with slight drapery on his far shoulder. Rev. TAPCEΩN MHTPOΠΟΛΕΩC On the left, Apollo, nude, standing right, holding laurel branch in his left hand, resting his left elbow on a tripod to his left and extending his right hand to clasp the right hand of Perseus, on the right, nude but for a cloak over his shoulder, standing left and holding his harpe in his left hand. Prieur 770 var. RPC III 3269. Very Rare. An attractive, clear example. Nearly extremely fine.

From a European collection.

The reverse of this coin refers to the important cult of Mithras and Perseus, which was centered on Tarsus (the city was refounded at some point in the 3rd century BC as Antioch-on-the-Kydnos, with Herakles and Perseus as its legendary founders).
