LUCANIA. Herakleia. Circa 390-340 BC. Nomos (Silver, 23.5 mm, 7.60 g, 5 h), circa 350-340. Head of Athena to right, wearing crested helmet ornamented, on the bowl, with griffin; below chin, Σ. Rev. ΗΡΑ-ΚEΙΩΝ (sic!) Nude Herakles, holding his club with his right hand, kneeling to right, grappling with the Nemean lion which attacks him from the right side; EY above exergue line; below, ear of barley to right. HN III 1366 (same reverse die). Franke & Hirmer 255. SNG ANS 50 (same dies). Work 8. Van Keuren 13. A fascinating coin with a remarkable reverse. Edge bang, otherwise, good very fine.
