Egypt, Alexandria. Diiocletian, 284-305. Tetradrachm (Potin, 17mm, 6.81 g 12), year IB = 12 = 295/6. ΔΙΟΚΛΗΤΙΑΝΟϹ ϹϵΒ Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Diocletian to right. Rev. L ΙΒ Herakles standing facing, holding club and the Apples of the Hesperides. Dattari 5701. Very rare. Dark brown patina. About extremely fine.

From a Swiss collection, ex Münzen und Medaillen FPL 503, September 1987, 288.

This coin was struck just prior to the revolt of Domitius Domitianus: thus, its unusual rarity. The reverse is, of course, a reference to Diocletian’s co-emperor, Maximianus Herculius
