Rev. +DЄL LA PATRA p around châtel tournois. CCS 125c. Metcalf, Crusades 1131-3 var. Tzamalis F 102. An extremely rare variant of a very scarce type. Good very fine.



John II Angelus Comnenus was the grandson of the illegitimate son of Michael II, Despot of Epirus. After the death of Michael II in 1271, John I gained control of Thessaly and created the state of the Great Wallachia, completely independent form the Despotate of Epirus. His capital city was located in Hypate (or Nea Patra), south of modern Lamia. John II was the last ruler of this short lived state; he died without heir in 1318.
