SPAIN. Acinipo. 1st century BC. (Bronze, 21.5 mm, 7.44 g, 9 h). Bunch of grapes; below, two stars and S; above, to right, crescent. Rev. ACINIPO between two grain ears. SNG BM Spain 1621-1622. A very rare variation. Struck on an irregular flan, otherwise, very fine.

SPAIN. Orippo. 1st half of 2nd Century BC. (Bronze, 31 mm, 32.26 g, 5 h). Male head to left, with bunch of grapes to his left. Rev. Bull butting to left; crescent above; below, ORIPENSE between two lines; in exergue, B. CNH 394/2. SNG BM Spain 1626. A scarcely seen large bronze denomination. Flan fault on obverse, otherwise, good fine.

SPAIN. Osset. Augustus(?), 27 BC-AD 14. (Bronze, 26 mm, 5.68 g, 12 h). OSSET Male head to right. Rev. Male figure standing left, holding bunch of grapes. ACIP 2470. RPC I 58. SNG BM Spain 1632-4 var. (legend on reverse). A well struck, clear example. Edge split and dig on the reverse, otherwise, very fine.

GAUL. Massalia. Circa 200-121 BC. (Bronze, 26 mm, 10.18 g, 11 h). Laureate head of Apollo to left. Rev. MAΣΣAΛIHTAN Bull butting to right, with grape cluster above. Depeyrot, Marseille 14/7. SNG Munich 397. Edge split and some striking flatness, otherwise, good very fine.

GAUL. Massalia. c. 130-121 BC. Drachm (Silver, 17 mm, 2.53 g, 4 h). Diademed and draped bust of Artemis to right, wearing pendant earring and pearl necklace, and with her bow and quiver over her shoulder. Rev. MAΣΣA Lion prowling to left, with open jaws and upraised right forepaw; in exergue, Γ. Depeyrot 44/4. LT 1098. Attractively toned. Some striking flatness, otherwise, good very fine.

CAMPANIA. Neapolis. Circa 300-280 BC. Didrachm or nomos (Silver, 20.5 mm, 7.20 g, 8 h). Diademed head of nymph to left, wearing triple-pendant earring and pearl necklace; behind neck, thyrsos. Rev. NEOΠOΛITΩN Man-headed bull walking to right; above, Nike flying right, placing wreath on bull's head; below, IΣ. HN III 586. Sambon 519. SNG ANS 409. A carefully centered and nicely toned example. Very fine.

APULIA. Arpi. Circa 215-212 BC. (Bronze, 21 mm, 6.84 g, 7 h). ΔAΞOY Laureate head of Zeus to left, with thunderbolt behind his neck. Rev. ΑΡΠΑ-ΝΩΝ Boar standing right; above, spearhead right. HN III, 642. Siciliano, Arpi Group B, Series 1. SNG ANS 635-636. Of excellent style, a fine example. Very fine.

APULIA. Canusium. Circa 300-250 BC. Obol (Silver, 9 mm, 0.24 g, 5 h). Kantharos flanked by cornucopia and oinochoe. Rev. K-A Lyre. HN III 657. SNG ANS 692. A rarely encountered issue. Struck on a particularly broad and thin flan. Edge slightly broken at 7h, otherwise, very fine.

APULIA. Neapolis. Circa 325-250 BC.(Bronze, 16 mm, 3.42 g, 8 h). Wreathed head of Dionysos right; thyrsos over shoulder. Rev. ΝΕΑΠ Grape vine with cluster. HN III 800. SNG ANS 711. Very rare; particularly attractively patinated. Obverse slightly off center, otherwise, good very fine.

CALABRIA. Tarentum. Circa 470-465 BC. Drachm (Silver, 16 mm, 4.01 g, 6 h). TAPAS (retrograde) Forepart of hippocamp to right; below, scallop shell. Rev. Diademed head of Satyra to right, her hair tied in a bun at the back; behind neck A. HN III 839. Vlasto 155. Very rare early variety; toned. Very fine.

CALABRIA. Tarentum. Circa 450-380 BC. Hemiobol (Silver, 8 mm, 0.29 g, 12 h). Skyphos with handle to right; to left, Ξ. Rev. Wreath. HN III 867. Vlasto 1648 (this coin). Sharp, with nice old cabinet toning, and particularly attractive. Minor edge crack, otherwise, good very fine.

CALABRIA. Tarentum. Circa 380-325 BC. Obol (Silver, 10.5 mm, 0.53 g, 2 h). K Cantharus, with four pellets around. Rev. K (retrograde) Bucranium, with pellet above. HN III 918. Vlasto 1615 var (without K). Attractively toned and struck on good silver. Good very fine.

CALABRIA. Tarentum. Circa 280-228 BC. Obol (Silver, 9 mm, 0.49 g, 9 h). Kantharos, flanked by two stars below. Rev. Kantharos, flanked by two stars below. HN III 1076. Vlasto 1654 var. Nicely toned; an unpublished variety with stars on both sides. Very fine.

LUCANIA. Herakleia. Circa 3rd century BC. (Bronze, 13 mm, 2.48 g, 7 h). Skyphos. Rev. Quiver with strap and bow. HN III 1443. Van Keuren 153. Solid green-brown patina. Very fine.

LUCANIA. Laos. Second half of the 4th Century BC. (Bronze, 11.5 mm, 1.10 g, 7 h). Head of Apollo Karneios to right. Rev. ΣTA-MO Crow standing to left over barley-ear. Garucci, pl. CXVIII 19. HN III 2309. Extremely rare, unillustrated in Historia Numorum III. Some uncleaned deposits as found, otherwise, good very fine.

LUCANIA. Copia (Thourioi). Circa 193-150 BC. Semis (Bronze, 20 mm, 3.90 g, 1 h). S (value mark) Veiled and turreted head of Tyche to right. Rev. KOΠIA /L.C.Q Cornucopia filled with fruits and grapes. HN III 1936 (same dies). SNG Copenhagen 1519. Rare. Clear and attractive. About extremely fine.

LUCANIA. Metapontum. Circa 400-340 BC. Didrachm or nomos (Silver, 22 mm, 7.40 g, 10 h). Youthful head of Dionysos to left, wearing a diadem adorned with a maeander pattern and upright ivy-leaves; below chin, E. Rev. ΜΕΤΑ Barley ear with leaf to left. HN III 1531. Noe 454 (same dies). SNG ANS 344 (this obverse die). Toned and of good style. Good fine.

LUCANIA. Metapontum. Circa 400-340 BC. Didrachm or nomos (Silver, plated, 20 mm, 7.22 g, 5 h). Head of Demeter to right. Rev. ΜΕTAΠO Ear of barley; to right, vine branch with grape cluster. Cf. Noe 390-419 for the obverse and 471 for the reverse. An attractive example of a contemporary plated didrachm, of excellent style and workmanship. Very fine.

LUCANIA. Metapontum. Circa 400-340 BC. Didrachm or nomos (Silver, 21 mm, 7.85 g, 4 h). Bearded head of Leukippos to right, wearing Corinthian helmet; behind, bunch of grapes. Rev. ΜΕ Barley ear with leaf to right. HN III 1553. Johnston Class A 4.3 (this coin). SNG Ashmolean 738 (same dies). Nicely toned and of particularly fine style. Possibly overstruck on a "pegasos", otherwise, about extremely fine.

LUCANIA. Metapontum. Circa 300-250 BC. (Bronze, 16.5 mm, 2.86 g, 3 h). Ivy-wreathed head of Dionysos to left. Rev. META Ear of barley with leaf to right; above leaf, cross-torch. HN III 1683. Johnston, Bronze, 47. Atrractive golden-brown patina. Die fault on the reverse, otherwise, extremely fine.

LUCANIA. Metapontum. Circa 300-250 BC. (Bronze, 12 mm, 1.36 g, 3 h). Laureate head of Pan right. Rev. META Ear of barley with leaf to right; syrinx right above leaf. HN III 1678. Johnston Bronze 43a. SNG Morcom 286. Light brown patina, fine style, and in unusually fine condition for a Greek bronze coin. Extremely fine.

LUCANIA. Velia. Circa 300-280 BC. Nomos (Silver, 20 mm, 7.35 g, 7 h). Head of Athena to right, wearing laureate Attic helmet. Rev. ΥΕΛΗΤΩΝ Lion walking to right; below, N; in the exergue, filleted thyrsos to right. HN III 1300. SNG ANS 1352. Williams 393 (O196/R277). Well centered and toned. Some roughness and deposits, otherwise, very fine.

BRUTTIUM. The Brettii. Circa 282-203 BC. Quartuncia (Bronze, 13.5 mm, 1.99 g, 1 h). Head of Amphitrite to left, wearing crab helmet; below, thunderbolt. Rev. BPET-TIΩN Crab; between claws, bunch of grapes. HN III 1990. Scheu 50. SNG ANS 120. With wonderful surfaces and a chocolate brown patina. Reverse struck slightly off-center, otherwise, extremely fine.

BRUTTIUM. The Brettii. Circa 216-214 BC. Drachm (Silver, 18 mm, 4.66 g, 10 h), issued during the Second Punic War. Diademed and draped bust of Nike to right; behind, sphinx seated to right. Rev. BPETTIΩN Dionysos standing facing, crowning himself and holding scepter; to right, shield above monogram. HN III 1964. Scheu II 66. Finely toned. Thin die break on the obverse, otherwise, good very fine.

BRUTTIUM. The Brettii. Circa 214-211 BC. Half Uncia (Bronze, 18.5 mm, 4.29 g, 8 h). Winged and diademed bust of Nike to left; thunderbolt below her neck. Rev. BPETTI[ΩN] Zeus, holding thunderbolt and scepter, driving biga to left; below, bunch of grapes. HN III 1989. Scheu 46. SNG ANS 112. A clear, sharp and well centered example, with a fine green-brown patina. Extremely fine.

BRUTTIUM. The Brettii. Circa 211-208 BC. Unit (Bronze, 21 mm, 8.32 g, 6 h). Laureate head of Zeus to right; thunderbolt behind his neck. Rev. ΒΡΕΤΤΙΩΝ Nude warrior advancing to right, holding spear and large shield; at his feet to right, bunch of grapes. HN III 1988. Scheu 42. SNG ANS 102. Nice green patina as found. Nearly extremely fine.

BRUTTIUM. Hipponion. Circa 350-275 BC. Obol (Bronze, 19 mm, 4.66 g, 8 h). Laureate head of Zeus to left. Rev. EIΠΩNIEΩN Amphora; to right, lighted torch. HN III 2251 var. (Zeus to right). SNG 458 var. (caduceus instead of torch). A rare, possibly unpublished, variety. Oblong flan, otherwise, very fine.

BRUTTIUM. Kroton. Circa 400-325 BC. Stater (Silver, 20 mm, 7.49 g, 2 h), c. 340s. ΚΡΟΤΟΝΙΑ - ΤΑΣ Laureate head of Apollo to right, with his long hair streaming down the back of his neck. Rev. Infant Herakles (Herakliskos) seated facing, his head turned to left, strangling two snakes, holding one in each hand; below, graffito of MΙΣΛI . HN III 2157. SNG ANS 384-8. Toned. Very fine.

BRUTTIUM. Nuceria. Circa 225-200 BC. (Bronze, 20 mm, 8.22 g, 12 h). Laureate head of Apollo right; grape cluster behind; crab below neck (partially visible here). Rev. NOYKP-INΩN Horse standing to left; pentagram below. HN Italy 3438. SNG ANS 595 var. (symbol). SNG Copenhagen 1904 var. (symbol). Fine olive green patina. Good very fine.

SICILY. Akragas. Circa 415-406 BC. Hemilitron (Bronze, 26 mm, 18.57 g, 2 h). AKPA Eagle to left, clutching dead hare in its talons. Rev. Crab; above, fig leaf; below, crayfish swimming to left; six pellets in the upper fields. HGC 2, 137. Westermark, Coinage, 688-691. SNG ANS 1029. Rare with the eagle to left. Minor cleaning marks, otherwise, very fine.

SICILY. Akragas. Circa 415-406 BC. Hemilitron (Bronze, 27 mm, 13.88 g, 2 h). AKPA Eagle right, clutching dead hare in its talons. Rev. Crab; above, fig leaf upwards; below, crayfish swimming to left; six pellets in the fields. HGC 2, 136. Westermark, Coinage, 694-5 (this obverse die, but struck from a different reverse die). Brown patina. Slightly off-center reverse, otherwise, very fine.

SICILY. Alontion. Circa 241 BC. (Bronze, 13 mm, 1.95 g, 1 h). Head of young Dionysos to right; behind, bunch of grapes. Rev. AΛΟΝ-ΤΙΝΩΝ in two lines within laurel wreath, with ties below. Calciati I pg. 69, 11. HGC 221 var. (same obverse die but reverse wreath ties above). SNG ANS -. Extremely rare bronze from Alontion. Slightly rough, otherwise, about very fine.

SICILY. Alontion. Circa 241 BC. (Bronze, 12 mm, 1.94 g, 12 h). Head of young Dionysos to right; behind, bunch of grapes. Rev. AΛΟΝ-ΤΙΝΩΝ in two lines within laurel wreath with ties above. SICILY. Enna. Circa 258-200 BC. (Bronze, 20 mm, 11.40 g, 6 h). ENNA-IΩN Demeter standing facing, holding torch and Nike in her outstretched hands. Rev. Grape cluster and tendrils, all within laurel wreath with ties above. CNS (Henna) 6. HGC 2, 396 (this coin). SNG ANS 1336. Very scarce, and with an unusually archaic representation of Demeter. Very fine.
