Andronicus II Palaeologus, 1282-1328. Hyperpyron (Gold, 25 mm, 4.16 g, 6 h), class I, Constantinople, 1282-1294. Bust of the Virgin orans within the city walls furnished with six groups of towers; above, sigla B/X; below, sigla unclear. Rev. ANΔPO-NIKOC EN XΩ ΔECΠOTHC O/ ΠAΛΕ (under Andronicus) OΛΟΓOC (right of Jesus)/ IC-XC Andronicus, on left, nimbate and kneeling right, blessed by Christ, nimbate, standing facing on right, holding Book of Gospels. Bendall, Sigla 27 (?). DOC 231. PCPC 91B. SB 2326. Nicely toned reverse, with an unusually clear portrait of Andronicus. Minor flatness, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.
