AKARNANIA, Federal Coinage (Akarnanian Confederacy). Circa 420 BC. Trihemiobol (Silver, 12 mm, 1.09 g, 1 h), Stratos. Horned and bearded head of the river god Acheloos to right; below, crescent with points downwards. Rev. ΣTP in a shallow incuse square. BCD 357. Imhoof-Blumer, A. 163, 8 var. Extremely rare; the third and best example known. Slightly porous and struck from a very worn obverse die, otherwise, about extremely fine.

Not only were the early coins of the Akarnanian Confederacy issued in very small numbers, they were also used, apparently constantly, over a long period of time, with most surviving specimens being extremely worn (as BCD Akarnania lot 7). Given the remoteness of Akarnania, 5th century coins would have continued to circulate until down into the 3rd century. This piece is actually – by far – one of the finest known examples.
