KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’, 336-323 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 17.08 g, 2 h), struck under Audoleon, Astibus (?) in Paeonia or Damastion in Illyria, c. 300-286. Head of youthful Herakles in lion's skin headdress to right. Rev. ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ Zeus seated to left on throne, holding eagle on his outstretched right hand and long scepter with his left; to left, Λ over torch. Price 643b (same dies as plate coin). Waggoner, Audoleon issue I, 8 (same dies). Clear, attractively toned, well centered and well struck, with a bold, high relief head of Herakles of powerful style. Nearly extremely fine.

This coin is the first issue of the tetradrachms in the name and types of Alexander the Great, struck by the Paeonian king Audoleon, and is a close imitation of the almost contemporary Amphipolis issue (Price 443) struck during the reign of Kassander.
