nomos 28

Welcome to Nomos Auction 28, our third sale of May 2023. We have begun our auction season with Auction 26, and extraordinary single owner collection of Greek silver fractions: the Collection sans Pareille. Auction 27 contains the Eidswick Collection of Greek Coins, which was put together by an individual who grew to love Greek art, history and mythology, and brought together an idiosyncratic collection of Greek coins to illustrate that love. So now we come to Auction 28, a more general sale of Greek, Roman and Byzantine coins coming from a number of different consignors – a “normal” sale as it were (280 carefully selected lots). The sale begins with two Celtic pieces (lot 1102 is an intriguing eastern Celtic tetradrachm of the type of Philip II, which is stylistically not quite right to be Greek). Lots 1103-1259 are Greek coins, ranging from a silver didrachm from Neapolis in Campania to a bronze dichalkon of Cleopatra VII, from Chalkis ad Libanon. Among other things, there are a magnificent stater from Pantikapaion (lot 1136), a unique tetradrachm from Akanthos (1150), and extremely rare stater from Kierion in Thessaly (1170), a splendid selection of Corinthian-type staters, an astonishing and rare triobol from Caria (lot 1222), and many more. As for Roman coins – lots 1260 – 1333 – they range from a denarius of Mark Antony to a solidus of Leo II; there is a pleasing group of denarii, bronzes both imperial and provincial, and gold, including a wonderful aureus of Valerian I minted in Samosata shortly before his capture by the Persians (lot 1327). Turning to the Byzantine world, the highlight is an extensive collection of gold solidi of the first quarter of the 8th century, acquired by officina number (lots 1338-1371). Aside from some issues of Justinian II’s second reign (lots 1339-1341), there are rare coins of Philippicus (1342-1346), even rarer issues of Anastasius II (1247-1357), and some extremely rare solidi of Theodosius III (1358-1363). The collection ends with an interesting group of Leo III (1364- 1371), including one with the emperor wearing an unexpected variant hairstyle (1365). The sale ends with lot 1380, an extremely rare aspron trachy of Michael II Comnenus-Ducas, despot of Epirus.
