CALABRIA, Tarentum. Circa 480-470 BC. Nomos (Silver, 16mm, 7.81 g). ΤΑRΑϞ (retrograde) Phalanthos, nude, riding dolphin to right; below, scallop. Rev. Wheel of four spokes. Fischer-Bossert 80h (this coin). HN III 833. Toned as found but with slightly rough surfaces, nevertheless well struck and well centered. Nearly extremely fine.

CALABRIA, Tarentum. Circa 470-465 BC. Litra (Silver, 9mm, 0.92 g 9). Scallop shell. Rev. Diademed head of Satyra to left within a linear circle; all within shallow incuse. HN III, 840. Jameson 94 (this coin). Vlasto 1147/8 var. Very rare. With a dark patina as found. Very fine.

Lucania, Metapontum. Circa 400-340 BC. Didrachm or Nomos (Silver, 20mm, 7.73 g 11). Bearded head of Leukippos to right, wearing Corinthian helmet; behind, bunch of grapes. Rev. ΜΕ Barley ear with leaf to right. HN III 1553. Johnston A4.2. Of particularly fine style, and nicely toned. A few minor scratches, otherwise, about extremely fine.

LUCANIA, Metapontum. Circa 300-250 BC. Chalkous (Bronze, 14mm, 2.03 g 11). Head of Athena to right wearing crested Corinthian helmet. Rev. Μ Ε Three barley grains with two letters and a fly between them. HN III 1699. Johnston Bronze 63. SNG ANS 583. A really attractive piece with a dark green patina. Extremely fine.

LUCANIA. Metapontum. Circa 290-280 BC. Didrachm or nomos (Silver, 22 mm, 7.58 g, 8 h). Head of Demeter to right, wearing wreath of barley ears. Rev. ΜΕΤΑ Ear of barley; to left, satyr standing on barley leaf and playing pipes. HN III 1614. Johnston D2.8. SNG Lloyd 395. Rare. Nicely toned. Areas flatly struck on the reverse, otherwise, extremely fine.

LUCANIA, Velia. Circa 300-280 BC. Diobol (Silver, 10mm, 1.13 g 3). Head of a nymph to right, her hair bound in an elaborate sakkos tied at the top; below chin, Ε. Rev. Owl, facing with spread wings, standing on Ζ. HN III 1314. SNG ANS 1278. Williams 636. Rare. Lightly toned. Nearly extremely fine.

BRUTTIUM, Kroton. Circa 500-480 BC. Stater (Silver, 22mm, 7.88 g 5). ϘΡΟ Tripod with three handles and legs ending in lions’ paws; border of dots. Rev. Eagle flying right, with spread wings (incuse); rayed border. HN III 2095. SNG ANS 287 (same dies). An attractive example, with a splendid reverse. Extremely fine.

BRUTTIUM. Rhegion. Circa 415/0-387 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 22 mm, 16.82 g, 6 h). Lion’s mask facing. Rev. ΡΗΓΙΝΟΝ Laureate head of Apollo to right, with olive sprig behind. Herzfelder 86. HN III 2496. A splendid piece, struck in high relief and lightly toned. Good extremely fine.

SICILY, Akragas. Circa 460-450/46 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 23mm, 17.37 g 12). ΑΚΡΑC - ΑΝΤΟC (partially retrograde) Eagle standing left with closed wings. Rev. Crab; below, lotos flower on double spiral vine; all within a shallow circular incuse. Randazzo 15. Rizzo pl. I, 11-12. SNG ANS 981. SNG Ashmolean 1671. Nicely toned. A beautiful coin struck in high relief. Extremely fine.

Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Bronze, 19mm, 2.99 g 12), Sirmium, 324. CONSTANTINVS AVG Laureate head of Constantine to right. Rev. SARMATIA DEVICTA / SIRM Victory advancing to right, holding trophy in her right hand and palm branch in her left, treading on bound captive to right. RIC VII, 48. A well struck and historically interesting coin. Extremely fine.

SICILY, Selinos. Circa 515-480/70 BC. Obol (Silver, 9mm, 0.63 g 3). Leaf of wild parsley. Rev. Leaf of wild parsley within a linear circle inside a circle or pellets; all within a circular incuse. Arnold 13. SNG ANS 687 var. SNG Copenhagen 596. SNG Lloyd 1215. Nicely toned and well struck. About extremely fine.

ZEUGITANA, Carthage. Circa 350-320 BC. Stater (Gold, 20mm, 9.25 g 8). Head of Tanit to left, wearing grain wreath, triple pendant earring and necklace of seven oblong pendants. Rev. Horse standing right on exergual line; to right, three pellets. Jenkins & Lewis 77 (same dies). A wonderful, sharply struck coin, beautifully detailed and minted from fresh dies. Virtually as struck.

CIMMERIAN BOSPOROS, Pantikapaion. Circa 340-325 BC. Drachm (Silver, 15mm, 3.56 g 12). Bearded head of Pan to left, turned three-quarters facing to front. Rev. Π - Α - Ν Bull’s head to left, turned slightly to front. Anokhin 121. MacDonald 57. SNGBM 880. SNG Stancomb 548. A very attractive, sharply struck and darkly toned example. Nearly extremely fine.

KINGS of SKYTHIA. Sariakos, mid 2nd century BC. Drachm (Silver, 17mm, 3.89 g 12). Head of youthful Dionysos to right, wearing ivy wreath. Rev. Β]ΑΣΙΛΕ[ΩΣ]- ΣΑΡΙΑΚ[ΟΥ] Bowcase, club and grain ear on stalk; below, monogram of ΠΥΡ. Cf. Nomos 7, 2013, 20 (same type but from different dies). Extremely rare. Toned and clear. Good very fine.

MACEDON, “Aigai” = the Mygdones or the Krestones. Circa 485-470 BC. Trihemiobol (Silver, 11mm, 1.03 g). He-goat moving right, head turned back to left; in field above, pellet within circle; to right, pellet. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. SNG Copenhagen 28. A scarce variety. Nicely toned and very attractive. Extremely fine.

MACEDON. Akanthos. Circa 480-470 BC. Tetrobol (Silver, 16 mm, 2.37 g). Forepart of lioness to right, head seen from turned toward her right and seen from above; above, floral ornament. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. Dewing 1000. SNG ANS 19. An unusually attractive, toned and well struck piece. Extremely fine.

KINGS of MACEDON. Philip II, 359-336 BC. Stater (Gold, 17mm, 8.59 g 11), Pella, circa 340-328. Laureate head of Apollo to right. Rev. ΦΙΛΙΠΠΟΥ Biga rushing to right, driven by charioteer holding goad in his right hand and reins in his left; below horses, thunderbolt. Le Rider 132. An attractive, well centered and well struck example. Extremely fine.

KINGS of MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’, 336-323 BC. 1/4 Stater (Gold, 11mm, 2.16 g 1), ‘Amphipolis’, c. 330-320. Head of Athena to right, wearing Corinthian helmet adorned with serpent. Rev. ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ Thunderbolt, bow and club. Price 169. Attractive and well-struck. Extremely fine.

KINGS of MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’, 336-323 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 27mm, 16.96 g 12), Odessus, c. 280-200. Head of Herakles to right, wearing lion’s skin headdress. Rev. ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; in field to left, Δ within Ο above monogram of ΞΩ. Price 1145. An attractive toned example of good style. Extremely fine.

Boeotia, Thebes. Circa 480-460 BC. Stater (Silver, 16mm, 11.87 g). Boeotian shield with rim divided into eight compartments. Rev. Incuse square with anticlockwise mill-sail pattern; at the center, q. BCD Boiotia 350 (this coin). SNG Berry 552. SNG Delepierre 1344. Attractively toned, the finest known example of this type. Extremely fine.

ATTICA, Athens. Circa 430s BC. Drachm (Silver, 14mm, 4.26 g 2). Head of Athena to right, wearing crested Attic helmet adorned with olive leaves and palmette turned upwards. Rev. ΑΘΕ Owl standing right with head facing; to left, olive spray; all within incuse square. Demeester 72 (this coin). Kroll 10c. Svoronos pl. 13, 25. Toned and well-struck. Extremely fine.

ISLANDS off ATTICA, Aegina. Circa 525/0-500 BC. Obol (Silver, 7mm, 1.01 g). Sea turtle with T-shaped arrangement of pellets on his shell. Rev. Incuse divided into an irregular number of compartments. BMC 57. Klein 212. SNG Copenhagen 506. A very attractive, toned and well struck example. About extremely fine.

ISLANDS off ATTICA, Aegina. Circa 480-457 BC. Stater (Silver, 21mm, 12.28 g). Sea turtle with line of pellets down the back of its shell. Rev. Square incuse with large skew pattern. Milbank Pl. I, 15. SNG Copenhagen 507. With a turtle in high relief on a broad flan, but struck from a slightly worn obverse die. Extremely fine.

ELIS, Olympia. 92nd Olympiad, 412 BC. Obol (Silver, 10mm, 0.89 g 9). Head of Hera to right, wearing a stephane ornamented with two palmettes and, between them, Η Ρ Α. Rev. Ϝ - Α Flaming thunderbolt. BCD Olympia 76 (this coin). Seltman pl. XII, 6 (same dies). Extremely rare. Very fine.

Paphlagonia, Sinope. Circa 425-410 BC. Drachm (Silver, 6.05 g). Head of a sea eagle to left; below, dolphin to left. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square composed of two raised and two sunken squares; within one of the sunken squares, Κ. SNG Oxford 265. SNG von Aulock 6837. Toned, in high relief and with a dramatic eagle head. Extremely fine.
