NABATAEA. Petra. Aretas IV, with Shaqilat, 9 BC-AD 40. Drachm (Silver, 13.5 mm, 4.79 g, 12 h), regnal year 27(?) = AD 18/19. "Aretas, king of the Nabataeans, who loves his people"(in Nabataean Aramaic) Long-haired, moustached, laureate and draped bust of Aretas IV to right. Rev. "Shaqailat, queen of the Nabataeans, year 27(?)" (in Nabataean Aramaic) Jugate draped busts to right of Aretas IV, long-haired and moustached, laureate, V-shaped ornament on his forehead, and Shaqailat, veiled and wearing Isis headdress. Cf. Al-Qatanani 96-97 (years 24-25). Cf. Barkay 161 (year 26). Meshorer Nabataeans -. Very rare and apparently unpublished date for a jugate portrait issue. Iridescent toning. Porosity and die wear, otherwise, fair.

From the collection of John Aiello.

Although the date is worn and largely off flan, it does appear that there is a second 1 numeral at the end, thereby making it year 27 and not the known year 26.
