Obolos 35

ancient greek silver fractions, the Collection Sans Pareille, part III

overview
Starting Price: 100 CHF
Hammer Price:  260 CHF
Lot 1405

TROAS. Dardanos. 5th century BC. Trihemiobol (Silver, 9 mm, 1.20 g, 8 h). Cock standing right. Rev. Incuse head of horse to left. M&M FPL 570 (1993), 112 = lot 1406 in this auction. Cf. SNG München 173 (as a tetartemorion). Possibly the best example of this type. Very fine.

From the "Collection sans Pareille" of Ancient Greek Fractions, acquired in 1986.

A few examples of this type have surfaced in the market during the last two decades -alas none as nice as this one-. Recently a few auction houses have decided to attribution this coin to Dikaia in Macedon. This is not correct as there is no parallel in the coinage of the Macedonian Dikaia or in any mint of the Chalkidian district. An attribution to the Thracian Dikaia looks more plausible to this cataloguer but until this issue is resolved we do favor, and use, the traditional attribution to Dardanos.
