Obolos 35

ancient greek silver fractions, the Collection Sans Pareille, part III

overview

Extremely rare! Not in the BCD collection!

Starting Price: 300 CHF
Hammer Price:  1500 CHF
Lot 1310

MEGARIS. Megara. Circa 385-375 BC. Diobol (Silver, 10 mm, 1.27 g, 7 h). Laureate head of Apollo to left. Rev. [MEΓA] Kithara within shallow incuse square. BCD -. BMC 4-5 (same obverse die). Dreni, Period I. SNG Copenhagen 463-464 (same obverse die). Pozzi 2022 (same dies). Extremely rare: according to Dreni only six examples are known, not counting this one. Very fine.

From the "Collection sans Pareille" of Ancient Greek Fractions, ex Spink's NCirc. CX, 4 (August 2002), GK0642 (how could BCD lose this coin is a mystery to the cataloger).

We would like to thank Mrs Stella Dreni for her valuable help in describing this lot. Dreni's six specimens are all in public institutions - two in London, two in Copenhagen and two in Munich - making this the only available example on the market. The fact that it is actually missing from the BCD collection, famous for its comprehensiveness, and that BCD missed it when it was in NCirc, is a true mystery.
