Augustus, 27 BC-AD 14. Denarius (Silver, 19 mm, 3.59 g, 6 h), Lugdunum, 15-13. AVGVSTVS DIVI F Bare head of Augustus to right. Rev. IMP X / ACT Apollo Citharoedus of Actium, in long drapery, standing left. BMC 461. Lyon 28. RIC² 171a. RSC 144. Good very fine.



Already long before the Battle of Actium was fought, a festival dedicated to Apollo was celebrated there. After his victory, Augustus enlarged the temple, and revived the ancient festival, which was henceforth celebrated once in five years, with musical and gymnastic contests, and horse races.
