Cnaeus Pompeius Magnus (Pompey the Great), 48 BC. Denarius (Silver, 19 mm, 3.92 g, 1 h), military mint moving with Pompey in Greece, M. Terentius Varro, proquaestor. VARRO•PRO-Q Terminal bust of Jupiter to right, wearing diadem. Rev. MAGN PRO / COS Long sceptre upright, flanked by dolphin on the left and eagle on the right. Babelon (Terentia) 15 and (Pompeia) 7. Crawford 447/1a. RBW - (but cf. 1566). Sydenham 1033. Woytek, Arma et Nummi, p. 558 (for date). Very rare. Good very fine.

Coins of this type with retrograde 'N' on the reverse are considered to be contemporary imitations from the Balkans by some scholars. We broadly agree with this opinion, but stick to the traditional classification unil conclusive proof is published.
