Lot 514

SYRIA, Seleucis and Pieria. Uncertain Mint. Mid 1st century BC. (Bronze, 23 mm, 6.90 g, 1 h), Dated year 1 of the Pompeian Era = 64/3 BC). Draped bust of Herakles left, club over shoulder. Rev. LA (date) / PΩMHΣ Ram of prow to right, all within wreath. HGC 10, 381 (Gadara). Rosenberger 1 (Gadara). RPC -. Spijkerman 1 (Gadara). Very rare, of great historical interest and excellent for type! Somewhat rough, otherwise, good fine.

The coin is dated LA/ PΩMHΣ = Year one of Rome. Unfortunately, no ethnic or ruler is mentioned. The coint probably belongs to the Levante and it is quite likely related to the activities of Pompey the Great in the region!
