Legio II Italica was recruited in 165 to safeguard the Danube frontier. Since 180 it was stationed in Lauriacum in what is today the province of Upper-Austria. During the Year-of-the-Five-Emperors, it supported Septimius Severus, who was stationed a few hundred miles further downstream in Carnuntum. The legion played an important role in the emperor's march on Rome in 193 and the subsequent destruction of Pescennius Niger. To thank the soldiers for their support during his rise to power, Septimius Severus bestowed the honorary title of fidelis on LEG II Italica.
