Augustus, 27 BC-AD 14. Denarius (Silver, 18.5 mm, 3.56 g, 7 h), Colonia Patricia (?), 19 BC. CAESAR AVGVSTVS Bare head of Augustus to right. Rev. SIGNIS / RECEPTIS Aquila on left and standard on right flanking S/P/Q/R arranged around round shield inscribed CL•V. BMC 417. Cohen 265. RIC² 86a. Pleasing portrait of the Princeps. Scratch, and reverse somewhat off-centre, otherwise, good very fine.

The clipeus virtutis, Latin for "shield of bravery" - depicted at the centre of the reverse - was awarded to Augustus for his "courage, clemency, justice and piety" by the senate and displayed in the Curia Julia in 27 BC. Copies were on display around the empire.
