Divus Caesar

Starting Price: 300 CHF
Hammer Price:  5000 CHF
Lot 633

Divus Julius Caesar, died 44 BC. Denarius (Silver, 20 mm, 3.89 g, 12 h), struck under the moneyer Q. Voconius Vitulus, Rome, 40 BC. Laureate head of Julius Caesar to right. Rev. C · VOCONIVS / S C / VITVLVS · Q · / DESIGN Calf standing to left. Babelon (Julia) 121, (Voconia) 1. Crawford 526/4. CRI 331. Sydenham 1133. Nicely toned and well centered. Tiny scratch behind head, otherwise, very fine.

The posthumous portraits of Julius Caesar vary greatly in their quality, even within a single issue. This is a dramatically emotional head and was certainly engraved by a master portraitist, undoubtedly a Greek.
