KINGS OF THRACE. Sparadokos, circa 464-444 BC. Diobol (Silver, 10 mm, 1.11 g, 4 h), Olynthos (?). ΣΠ-Α Forepart of horse to left. Rev. Eagle flying right, holding serpent in its beak; above head, Δ; all within incuse square. HGC 3.2, 1672. Peter p. 63; var. (eagle to left). Youroukova 20 var. (eagle to left). About very fine.

Sparadokos was a son of Teres I, the founder of the Odrysian kingdom of Thrace - which consisted of much of modern-day eastern Bulgaria and parts of southern Romania, and was centered on the valley of the Hebros River - in the aftermath of the failed Persian invasion of Greece in 480-479 BC. Little is known about Sparadokos. His sibling, Sitalkes, succeeded his father as the ruler of the greater part of the Odrysian kingdom. Sparadokos gained control of some part of the kingdom, but precisely which part and its relationship to the rest of the kingdom is not known.
