Lot 100

MACEDON. Terone. Circa 400-348 BC. Hemiobol (Bronze, 14 mm, 3.83 g, 9 h). Laureate head of Apollo to right. Rev. T E Oinochoe to left. Hardwick - cf 22 and 23. HGC 3.1 - SNG ANS -. Extremely rare and unpublished. Possibly the best, in terms of condition, bronze coin of Terone available. Very fine.

The weight of 3.83 is close to Hardwick 22, which has two oinochoe on the reverse and an average weight of 3.78-3.46 gr. While the types are close to Hardwick 23, the flan is much broader and the weights range from only 1.95 to 1.67 gr. The custom of using the number of vessels on the coins to differentiate between the denominations is also found on the contemporary coinage of Mende. Could this coin be a new denomination of Terone's?.
