Fascinating “Aigai“ Hemiobol

Starting Price: 150 CHF
Hammer Price:  150 CHF
Lot 142

MACEDON, “Aigai”. Circa 485-470 BC. Hemiobol (Silver, 7mm, 0.19 g). Head of a goat to right. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. Cf. CNG 138, 26 April 2006, lot 44 (tetartemorion). Cf. SNG Oxford 2232 var. (obol?). Rare and interesting with slightly rough surfaces. About extremely fine.

Traditionally ascribed to Aigai (”Aegae”) in Macedonia, the attribution of coins like this are now rather in flux, and it may be better thought of as having been struck by one of the tribes in the area. In any event, this attractive little hemiobol is particularly endearing with its tiny head of a goat with a long, curved horn.
