SICILY. Syracuse. Dionysios I, 405-367 BC. Dekadrachm (Silver, 36 mm, 43.04 g, 2 h), signed by the engraver Euainetos on the reverse, but off the flan on this coin, circa 405-400. Charioteer, holding kentron in his right hand and the reins with his left, driving fast quadriga to left; above, Nike flying to right, to crown the driver with a wreath held with both hands; in the exergue, arranged on two steps, a shield, a cuirass between two greaves, and a crested Attic helmet. Rev. ΣΥ-ΡΑ-ΚΟΣ-ΙΩΝ Head of Arethusa to left, a wearing wreath of wheat leaves, triple-pendant earring and pearl necklace; around, four dolphins: three swimming to left from behind her head on the right to before her chin, and one swimming downwards to right before her forehead; below, [signature ΕΥΑΙΝΕ]. Gallatin O.IV/R.C. VIII. Attractively toned and sharply struck. Very minor die breaks and an unimportant flan fault, otherwise, extremely fine.
