THRACE. Byzantion. Circa 387/6-340 BC. Obol (Silver, 8 mm, 0.50 g). ΠΥ Forepart of a bull to left, with a wreath around his neck; border of dots. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square of millsail form. SNG BM Black Sea 1. Savoca 24, 2018, 58. Very rare. Boldly struck and toned. Somewhat porous, otherwise, about extremely fine.

From the Collection of Jonathan H. Kagan (acquired as Orreskioi).

This elegant little coin can be firmly attributed to Byzantion, rather than to the Orreskioi or somewhere else in the Thraco-Macedonian area, because: 1) some better preserved examples have clear letters on the obverse and, 2) the windsail-form incuse is also found at Byzantion as compared to the typically Macedonian flat quadripartite incuse.
