KYRENAICA. Kyrene. Circa 525-480 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 23 mm, 15.94 g, 12 h). Silphium plant with six leaves (three on each side), five flowers (one at the top and one between each pair of leaves), and two fruits in the field to right. Rev. Forepart of a crouching lion to left, gnawing on a bone and with his head turned to face the viewer; all within an incuse square. Apparently unpublished. Extremely rare, seemingly unique. Well-centered and clear. Somewhat rough surfaces, otherwise, nearly very fine.

From the Battos Collection.

The reverse of this hitherto unknown type seems to be clearly taken from the contemporary drachm coinage of Velia.
