ISLANDS OFF THESSALY, Peparethos. Circa 500-480 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 31 mm, 17.02 g, 7 h). Grape bunch on vine with two leaves; all within a border of large dots. Rev. Nude youth (Staphylos?) riding dolphin to left across the field of a small incuse square. Babelon, Tarente, pl. III, 1 = Balcer, Peparethos 6a = HGC 6, 404 = Jameson 1109A = Kraay / Hirmer 445 = Traité II, 4, 761 and pl. CCCI. 11 (this coin). Beautiful and extremely rare, apparently the only example known. Toned and most impressive. Minor repair at the upper left on the obverse, somewhat porous and with possible traces of an uncertain undertype on the reverse, otherwise, about extremely fine / good very fine.
