Lot 91
Starting Price: 750 CHF
Current Bid: 1700 CHF
KINGS OF MACEDON. Philip II, 359-336 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 26.5 mm, 14.23 g, 6 h), struck posthoumously under Philip III Arhidaios, Pella, c. 323-318/7. Laureate head of Zeus to right. Rev. ΦΙΛΙΠΠΟΥ Jockey, holding palm branch, riding a horse walking to right; below right, Ι; below horse, horizontal thunderbolt. Le Rider 472 (D 246/R 389, same dies). Nicely struck and with an attractive old cabinet tone; fine style and rare: only two examples known by Le Rider. Very fine.

Ex Künker 318, 11 March 2019, 600.

On the day his son Alexander, later known as "the Great", was born, the horses of Philip won at the Olympic Games. It was a prestigious success, which was undoubtedly immortalized with this coin.
