ISLANDS OFF THRACE, Thasos. Circa 404-340 BC. Chalkous (Bronze, 12 mm, 1.10 g, 12 h), c. 360. Head of Herakles to right, wearing lion's skin headdress. Rev. ΘAΣION Tripod. Apparently unpublished. Cf. Le Rider, Thasiennes 30 var. (as Krenides). Another great rarity from Thasos. Some rough areas, otherwise, about very fine.
This coin is a great rarity within the Thasian series. Completely unknown, it is very similar to an almost contemporary Chalkous of Krenides, (Le Rider 30) a settlement of the Thasians on the epeiros of Macedonia: the only difference is that here the inscription clearly states that it was minted in Thasos itself and not at Crenides.
