Lot 25
Estimate: 12500 CHF
SICILY, Syracuse. Dionysios I. 405-367 BC. Drachm (Silver, 17mm, 4.07 g 8), probably an unsigned work by Eukleidas, c. 405-400. ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙΩΝ Head of Athena facing, wearing triple crested Attic helmet, earring and necklace of pendant acorns; around, four dolphins. Rev. ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙΩΝ Leukaspis, nude but for helmet, striding right, holding spear in his right hand and shield with his left; behind, square altar; before, sacrificed lamb lying on its back; in exergue, here off the flan as usual, ΛΕΥΚΑΣΠΙΣ. BMFA 420. Kunstfreund 121. Rizzo pl. XLII, 1(same obverse die), SNG ANS 308-310. Rare, one of the finest examples of this type known. With a wonderful and serene head of Athena beautifully centered on a large flan. Lovely toning as found. Minor scuff on the reverse, otherwise, extremely fine.

From an American collection, ex Nomos 6, 8 May 2012, 25, Numismatica Ars Classica 27, 12 May 2004, 120 and Numismatica Ars Classica 10, 9 April 1997, 145.

The head of Athena on this coin is a miniature version of the one signed by Eukleidas in the previous lot; it is equally outstanding in quality.
