KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’, 336-323 BC. Stater (Gold, 19 mm, 8.58 g, 1 h), struck under Seleukos I, Babylon, circa 311-300. Head of Athena to right, wearing triple-crested Corinthian helmet adorned with griffin rushing right on the bowl, pendant earring and pearl necklace. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ Nike standing left with her wings spread, holding laurel wreath in her right hand and stylis in her left; to left, ΜΙ; to right below wing, monogram of ΜΥΡ within wreath. Price 3748. A superb, lustrous piece, beautifully struck and well-centered. Good extremely fine.

From a collection in the Antipodes, ex Nomos 5, 25 October 2011, 141.

This piece was struck under the auspices of Selelukos I. The quality of the die cutting at Babylon is surprisingly fine: the gold staters struck there and at Memphis in Egypt are among the stylistically finest of all those struck in the name of Alexander.
