Lot 126

PISIDIA, Selge. Circa 370 BC. Stater (Silver, 10.87 g 1). Two nude wrestlers grappling with each other; between them, ΕΥ; in exergue, palmette. Rev. ΣΤΛΕΓΕΥΣ Slinger standing right; between his legs, astragalus; to right, triskeles. ACGC 1007. SNG Copenhagen 236. SNG von Aulock 5256 (same dies). Beautifully toned and exceptionally nice. Some minor flatness on the reverse, otherwise, good extremely fine.

Acquired from Stack’s in 1998.

This is unquestionably one of the finest of all the wrestler coins of Selge, it’s only rival being the famous piece from the von Aulock collection that sold for a record price in 2002.
