Extremely rare half siliqua of Leo I

Starting Price: 150 CHF
Hammer Price:  320 CHF
Lot 790

Leo I, 457-474. Half-siliqua (Silver, 17 mm, 1.32 g, 12 h), imitative issue by an uncertain Germanic (?) tribe. D N LEO PE-RPET AVG Pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Leo I to right. Rev. SAA/RELI/OX within wreath with ties below; CONS✷ (but N retrograde). Cf. RIC 650. RSC -. Extremely rare. Very fine.

From the Trausnitz Collection, ex Künker 97, 7 March 2005, 1982.

Sold as a regular issue in 2005, this piece, with its especially jumbled legend, was certainly not a product of the mint in Constantinople. It is quite different from those pieces with tall, thin busts on their obverses - as CNG e446, 2019, 433; Roma e39, 2017, 913; etc. - and it was certainly minted elsewhere. But where? Could it be eastern? A surprisingly interesting piece.
