SICILY. Messana. Circa 411-408 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24 mm, 16.86 g, 2 h). The nymph Messana, wearing chiton and standing left with the reins in both hands, driving biga of mules walking to left; above, Nike flying right to crown Messana; in exergue, two opposed dolphins. Rev. ΜΕΣΣΑΝΙΟΝ Hare springing to right; below, head of youthful Pan to right, with curly hair and with a tiny horn over his forehead. Caltabiano 604 (D217/R236). SNG ANS 369 (same dies). Well struck, carefully centered, and lightly toned. Some uncleaned deposits of horn silver on the obverse, otherwise, good very fine.
