Carinus, as Caesar, 282-283. Aureus (Gold, 19 mm, 4.49 g, 6 h), Siscia, 282. M AVR CARINVS NOB CAES Laureate and cuirassed bust of Carinus to right. Rev. VICTORIA AVG Victory standing left on globe, holding wreath in her outstretched right hand and palm branch (or a trophy?) in her left. Calicó 4372 (same dies). Cohen 139. RIC 190. An excellent, sharply struck piece. Some minor marks, otherwise, good extremely fine.

From the DeBakey Collection and from an English collection Nomos 10, 18 May 2015, 129.

The figure of Victory on the reverse of this coin is rather curious. In the first place she apparently has no wings; secondly, while usually described as carrying a trophy, what she seems to have in her left hand is quite odd: apparently a long straight palm branch with some sort of banner attached. This last could be some kind of odd trophy, but it also could just be a curious branch with a very peculiar wing behind. Yet that would mean that Victory's wings were shown in very strange way. If this is meant to be a wingless Victory it would imply that she was meant to be a permanent companion to Carinus (i.e., she could not fly away).
