MACEDON (ROMAN PROTECTORATE), Republican period. First Meris. Circa 167-149 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 29.5 mm, 16.82 g, 12 h), Amphipolis. Head of Zeus to right, bearded and wearing an oak-wreath. Rev. Price, Kraay-Mørkholm Essays p. 237, 213 (this coin). Extremely rare, one of 8 examples known. Attractively toned and of exquisite later Hellenistic style. Extremely fine.

From the Ravenel Collection, USA, and from that of Baron Thyssen-Bornemisza and Dr. T. S. Kaplan, Numismatica Genevensis IX, 14 December 2015, 42, ex Numismatica Genevensis V, 2 December 2008, 79, Bank Leu 50, 25 April 1990, 125 and Bank Leu 22, 8 May 1979, 84.

This coin was struck at the main Macedonian mint of Amphipolis, which was also the capital city of the First District of Macedonia, one of the four districts into which the Roman divided Macedonia falling the defeat of Perseus. The city was refounded as an Athenian colony in 437/6, finally following to Philip II in 357, and becoming the chief city of the kingdom. It is thought that this coin was struck to commemorate the foundation of the First District; a short time later the Senate in Rome closed down the Macedonian silver mines and the coinage ceased.
