SICILY. Syracuse. Hieron II of Syracuse in association with Ptolemy II Philadelphos of Egypt, c. 264/260 BC. Obol (Bronze, 26 mm, 16.67 g, 12 h), in the style of contemporary standard Ptolemaic coinage from Alexandreia, Syracuse, c. 264-263. Laureate head of Zeus right. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΠΤΟΛΕΜΑΙΟΥ Eagle, with spread wings, standing left on thunderbolt; in field to left, oval shield decorated with thunderbolt; the whole within dotted circle. Lorber 288 (but same obverse die as 289). SNG Copenhagen 114. Svoronos 610, pl xii 17. Wolf & Lorber, 'Idealized Alexandrian style', 610. Fine dark green patina. Very fine.
